The ASID Foundation, Inc., provides scholarships and awards for undergraduate and graduate students in a number of categories.

The ASID Foundation Proudly Announces the First David Barrett Memorial Scholarship Recipient

I'm thrilled to receive the first David Barrett Memorial Scholarship. This award validates the continuing importance of classical design and traditional materials in interior design education and practice. Those of us students who choose to pursue classical design as a career path do so because we believe that the timeless elements or values of that design tradition--scale, proportion, balance, harmony, symbolism and meaning--remain as relevant to interior design and its allied arts today as they ever were.  Personally, I find those values both inform and inspire my current work as a graduate student and the professional work I intend to pursue. This scholarship will enable me to complete my studies within the year.”
- Philip Gill, Allied ASID

The ASID Foundation has chosen Philip Gill, Allied ASID as the first recipient of the David Barrett Memorial Scholarship.  Gill is a masters candidate of Interior Architecture in the collaborative study program between the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) Extension and California Polytechnic University, Pomona. The scholarship jury recognized Gill’s thoughtful work and clear demonstration of classical design.

After completing his Masters program, Gill intends to establish an interior design firm focusing on residential interior design and furniture design in San Diego. He plans to use part of his $12,000 scholarship to attend classes at the Institute of Classical Architecture and Art (ICA&A) in New York City, and he eventually hopes to teach and establish a custom furniture line.

"There remains a need for design that is sensitive to the history and historical styles of the area, such as Spanish Colonial Revival and Arts and Crafts,” especially as it relates to southern California, Gill explains.

The David Barrett Memorial Scholarship recognizes an outstanding undergraduate or graduate student’s work which demonstrates a continuing interest and ability in utilizing classical designs. The scholarship was established in memory of David Barrett, FASID, who died on Dec. 8, 2008. Throughout his 58-year career, Barrett practiced mainly residential design. He has lectured, appeared on television and his work has been published in several major design publications.
