RealWorld DesignWeek 2008 – A Smashing Success

In its inaugural year, RealWorld DesignWeek took place Oct. 19 – 25, 2008. This exclusive ASID program offered student members the opportunity to pair up with professional, allied and industry partner representative members to attend one-day, on-site shadowing experiences. We are proud to say that the program was a hit. More than 1,400 members participated nationwide!

Student members were able to self-select their shadow day experiences online, by viewing profiles of the participating design professionals to see their specialty in the industry. A wide variety of design specialties available were represented including law office design, retail design, high-end residential, heath care, educational facilities, showroom management, business jet, yacht design and more. This vast array of practice areas was truly reflective of the membership makeup of ASID as the largest network of interior designers in the world.

In addition, students were not restricted to shadow days in their immediate area so many students traveled to cities where they desired to seek employment after graduating in order to begin networking with professionals there. We expect for follow-up surveys to indicate that students in different regions were able to expand their shadowing experience into a long term mentoring relationship, internship or even an entry-level job!

Take time to read feature articles in the Fall/Winter online edition of ACCESS student newsletter and the January/February 09 issue of ICON magazine, which highlight several accounts from program participants and get excited for next year!

Information on RealWorld DesignWeek 2009 should be available here at www.asid.org/rwdw in January.

  • Student members should stay informed on when registration opens as sign-up opportunities are first come, first served.  Here is a prime opportunity to learn about the design practice what you cannot in the classroom.
  • If you are graduating soon, consider serving as a shadow day host as a newly advanced allied member. As an emerging professional, your work experiences will give a student an accurate glimpse of the industry as a new designer.
  • ASID experienced professionals have endless expertise to share and workplace skills to demonstrate that would prove invaluable to an aspiring designer.

Whatever stage you are in professionally as an interior designer and ASID member, you won’t want to miss out on RealWorld DesignWeek!

A tremendous thank you to the RealWorld DesignWeek 2008 Spokesperson and Sponsors!
